Meet the Ewing family

Family owned and operated since 1989

Ewing Feather Birds began in 1989 and recently has been passed down to the third generation. Jerry & Doug Ewing started their adventure, working with Joe Keough, raising capons. At that time, Joe was looking to step away from his genetic hackle flock and the Ewings were ready to expand and start the business you know today.

During that time, Jerry & Doug raised mostly white and grizzly birds providing customers with feathers that fit the market during that time. As time went on, Jerry gradually stepped away only helping as needed and Doug took over. The line of feather birds has produced some of the finest feathers for more specific regions, but didn't expand much beyond their original line.

In 2015, Cole, the third generation, began making his way into the family business and was ready to take the lead and put his own twist on the current business. As a young entrepreneur, Cole wanted to make the jump and expand upon their existing products. In 2021, Ewing's purchased a small genetic flock from Alvin Theriault out of Northern Maine.

In 2024, Ewing's expanded yet again by purchasing the Root River Hackle line. Both purchases of new birds were in order to develop and expand a better dry fly line of hackle. Again, to serve customers with every need.

Today, Ewing Feather Birds is continuously expanding to provide hackle that supply every tyers needs, no matter their location. Each feather has a specific purpose - whether it's best for fresh water, salt water or you're just a hobby tyer.

The Family:
Doug remains an active part of the Ewing Feather Birds business - helping everywhere he's needed, packaging, trimming or even processing. He's also taking advantage of his duties as Grandpa of three littles!

Cole was married in 2021 (it was a busy year) to his wife, Morgan. You can find him doing any and all jobs on the farm at any time of the day. He's also the face behind the emails, phone calls and now the marketing. While he loves his job and connecting with all the customers, his favorite job is dad of two little girls.
